About e-book.au
e-book.au is a free, open library of Australian writing that has passed into the public domain. It is built and hosted in Brisbane.
Principles
- Rights first. Nothing goes up without a complete, public rights record.
- Australian-hosted, lean and green. The site is plain static files on a small Australian server. There's no database, no tracking, no ads and no third-party scripts or fonts. Pages are compressed and cached so they use as little energy and data as possible.
- Nobody left behind. The site works without JavaScript, on slow connections and old devices, and with screen readers. You can download books for offline reading.
Accessibility
- Semantic HTML with landmarks, headings and a skip link. Every function works by keyboard.
- Light and dark themes, which follow your system setting by default. Colour contrast meets WCAG AA.
- A font switch: the standard serif, Atkinson Hyperlegible (designed for low-vision readers) and OpenDyslexic. All fonts are hosted here under the SIL Open Font License.
- Adjustable text size in the reading view. Your settings stay in your browser, and nothing is sent to us.
- EPUB files include a navigable table of contents and accessibility metadata.
If something doesn't work for you, please tell us so we can fix it.
